Football ’58 National Champion Greenwood Dies

BATON ROUGE — Bobby Lynn Greenwood, a member of the 1958 LSU national football championship “Go” team, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 70 at his home in Lafayette.

Greenwood, who grew up in Lake Charles, was a two-year letterman at LSU in 1958 and 1959. The Tigers were a perfect 11-0-0 in winning the national championship in 1958 and 9-2 in 1959. The “Go” Team was considered the offensive power unit of Paul Dietzel‘s three-prong attack that captured the national championship and Greenwood was one of the offensive blockers as the team center.

Greenwood also was a member of the rodeo team at LSU and graduated with a degree in Agriculture. Greenwood was a breeder of registered angus cattle. He started his career as a meat inspector with the USDA, and then moved on to work for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. He also worked in the oil and gas industry as a production foreman.

Greenwood is survived by two sons, Bryan Greenwood and wife, Evelyn of Baton Rouge, and Eric Greenwood and his wife, Lisa of Lafayette; five grandchildren; his twin sister, Betty G. Robertson and her husband, Gordon D. Robertson of Baton Rouge; one nephew and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 44 years, Suzanne R. Greenwood, and a nephew, Douglas Robertson.

The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary Church in Lafayette. Visitation will be held Thursday at Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette from 4-8 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive. Visitation will also be held Friday at 8 a.m. until time of service.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Killeen, Danny Killeen, Dustin Moreau, Robin Moreau, Thomas Guillory and Bradley Guillory. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Hines, Bud Viator and Greenwood’s 1958 LSU National Championship teammates.
