BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 26 student-athletes represented LSU on the 2009 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll Thursday as announced by league commissioner Mike Slive.
The honorees come from 12 Tiger programs highlighted by 10 members of the track and field squads. Rachel Laurent garnered All-America honors after a fifth-place in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while Barrett Nugent earned a ninth-place finish in the final of the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Four members of the swimming and diving program were on the list, including Samantha Goates and Matt Vieke. Goates shattered the school record with a time of 1 minute, 57.52 seconds in the 200-backstroke at Texas A&M’s Art Adamson Invitational. Vieke scored in all three diving events for the Tigers at the SEC Championships.
The golf program accounted for three selections as Sang Yi notched SEC All-Freshman, All-Louisiana First-Team and Louisiana Freshman of the Year accolades after posting a 74.33 scoring average. He racked up four Top 10 finishes over 10 tournament appearances.
Baseball, softball and women’s basketball added two players apiece. LSU went 28-5 over its last 33 games en route to its sixth national championship when Austin Nola was inserted into the starting lineup at shortstop. Pitcher Brittany Mack compiled an 11-4 record during her rookie campaign, while her 2.36 ERA and .197 opponent batting average ranked inside the SEC Top 10. Barrett, who will represent the USA U19 Team at the World Championships in Thailand later this month, posted 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game picking up SEC Co-Freshman of the Year honors.
Football, volleyball and tennis each placed one as the 2009 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008-09 academic calendar. A complete list of LSU’s representatives is beloWomen’s
