BATON ROUGE — Former LSU players Aaron Hill and Brad Hawpe will continue the Tigers’ All-Star legacy next week when they participate in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The annual American League versus National League event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Hill, a second baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays, and Hawpe, an outfielder for the Colorado Rockies, have been named to the AL and NL rosters, respectively.
Hill, a native of Visalia, Calif., played at LSU from 2001-03 and was voted the 2003 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year. He is hitting .295 this season for the Blue Jays with 13 doubles, 20 homers and 59 RBI.
Hawpe, a product of Forth Worth, Texas, played at LSU from 1999-2000 and was named to the 2000 College World Series All-Tournament team. Hawpe is hitting .325 for the Rockies this season with 26 doubles, two triples, 13 homers and 56 RBI.
Hill and Hawpe increase to eight the number of former LSU players to earn MLB All-Star status.
LSU’s first All-Star was Boston Braves second baseman Connie Ryan of New Orleans, who played for the National League in 1944. New York Giants shortstop Alvin Dark of Comanche, Okla. was an NL All-Star in 1951, 1952 and 1954.
First baseman Joe Bill Adcock of Coushatta, La. represented the Milwaukee Braves on the 1960 National League roster.
Outfielder Albert Belle of Shreveport, La. was a five-time American League All-Star, representing the Cleveland Indians (1993-96) and Chicago White Sox (1997).
Right-hander Paul Byrd, a product of Louisville, Ky., pitched for the National League in 1999 as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, and right-hander Brian Wilson of Londonderry, N.H., represented the San Francisco Giants on the 2008 NL All-Star roster.
