Baseball Players Receive More Postseason Honors

OMAHA, Neb. — LSU players received more postseason awards Friday as the top-ranked Tigers prepare for their College World Series opener versus Virginia.

LSU senior pitcher Louis Coleman was named to the Rivals.com first-team all-America squad, marking the second time this season he has earned first-team all-America recognition.

Coleman, pitchers Matty Ott and Anthony Ranaudo, and outfielder Ryan Schimpf were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-South Region team.

Coleman, Ott and Ranaudo were voted to the ABCA first team, while Schimpf was a second-team selection.

Coleman, the 2009 SEC Pitcher of the Year, is 13-2 this season with a 2.76 ERA in 114 innings. He has recorded 19 walks and 124 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .217 against him. Coleman received first-team All-America recognition last month from Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Ott, the 2009 SEC Co-Freshman of the Year, has recorded 16 saves this season, setting the LSU single-season saves record.

Ott has a 3-2 record and a 2.17 ERA in 34 appearance this season with four walks and 63 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. He earned third-team All-America honors last month from Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Ranaudo, a second-team All-SEC selection, leads the conference in strikeouts with 147, and he will be the first LSU pitcher to pace the league in Ks since Kurt Ainsworth fanned 157 in 1999.

Ranaudo, the Tigers’ scheduled starting pitcher in Saturday’s College World Series game opener Virginia,  is 10-3 this season with a 2.95 ERA in 109.2 innings.

Schimpf, selected earlier this week by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the MLB Draft, is hitting .335 with 17 doubles, 19 homers, 63 RBI and 65 runs.
