BATON ROUGE — Pitcher Anthony Ranaudo of LSU and second baseman Chase Lyles of Northwestern State were named Wednesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Ranaudo, a sophomore right-hander from Jackson, N.J., was named Pitcher of the Week as he helped lead LSU to a series-opening win at Mississippi State last Thursday, limiting the Bulldogs to four runs on six hits in 7.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Ranaudo retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced during his 128-pitch outing, and he increased his season strikeout total to 118, which leads the Southeastern Conference.
Lyles, a junior from Plain Dealing, La., was named Hitter of the Week as he helped the Demons take a Southland Conference series last weekend from Southeastern Louisiana. Lyles hit four home runs in the three games ? he had a pair of two-run homers on Friday and he belted two three-run homers on Saturday.
His six RBI on Saturday set a career high and his five runs scored set a NSU single-game record. Lyles had multiple hits in all three games and was 2-for-2 in stolen bases. His home run barrage lifted his season total to 14 and his season slugging percentage to .700.
