Lady Tigers Golf Struggles Early in UCF Round 2

SORRENTO, Fla. — The 11th-ranked LSU women’s golf team had a struggle on its hand playing the first nine holes Monday in the second round of the UCF Challenge, putting the Lady Tigers in bad position for Wednesday’s final round.

The Lady Tigers, after finishing so strong on Sunday in shooting a two-under 286 that put them in a tie for third, four shots out of the lead, found the red numbers few and far between and bogeys and double bogeys too prevalent on the cards as the four eventual counting scores turned at 12-over par.

But LSU was able to keep things going on the back nine where the Lady Tigers finished well on Sunday and the team was able to bring in a two-over score on the back nine to keep the total score down to a 14-over 302. LSU finds itself presently in a five-team logjam for ninth place at 12-over par 588. They are tied with Duke, Pepperdine, Tennessee and Texas.

Arizona State shot a second consecutive four-under 284 to have the 36-hole lead at eight-under 568, one shot ahead of UCLA at 569 (seven-under). The Bruins had it down to 10-under par at one point in the round, but fell back to seven-under 569, just one shot back. Oklahoma State is the other under par team through two days at one-under 575.

Amalie Valle followed her three-under 69 with a two-over 74 and stands at one-under par 143 for 36-holes in a tie for 17th place. The individual lead is held by Jessica Yadloczky at eight-under 136 (66-70), two ahead of Nicole Smith of Tennessee at six-under 138.

LSU also counted a 74 from Jacqueline Hedwall at 76 from Megan McChrystal and a 78 from Tessa Teachman.

“It was a tough day for the Lady Tigers,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We obviously did not get off to a good start, but the girls stayed with it and were able to stop the damage on the final nine holes. We have to go out to play a complete round on Tuesday to get us ready to come home for our tournament.”

The Lady Tigers come back to Baton Rouge to host the LSU Golf Classic at the University Club beginning on Friday .
