BATON ROUGE — The No. 17 LSU softball team returned to practice for a two-hour workout Monday after its bye weekend at the new Tiger Park.
“You can tell that the rest did the players some good,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. “Their aches, bruises and sprains are getting better. The only way to get healthier is to have some time away.”
The Tigers (21-7, 8-3 SEC) head to Southern Miss Wednesday after an eight-day layoff.
Kirsten Shortridge fuels the LSU offense with a .386 batting average. She has racked up a team-leading 39 hits and is 15-for-20 in the stolen base department. Rachel Mitchell has hit safely in 11 of her last 14 games and paces the Tigers with 23 RBIs.
Brittany Mack has won her last six decisions in the circle, including three games over LSU’s trip to Mississippi. Cody Trahan is 6-2 with a 1.87 ERA and was a tough-luck loser to Ole Miss her last time out. Both hurlers are holding their opponents under a .200 batting average.
Girouard also will meet with the media Tuesday as part of LSU’s Walk-On’s Luncheon. She will preview the upcoming week for Tiger softball, including the program’s first annual “Swing for the Cure” game Sunday against No. 9 Tennessee to benefit the Baton Rouge Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
On display will be the commemorative pink uniforms the Tigers will be wearing for Sunday’s game that were donated by the LSU Softball Diamond Backers in addition to a trio of pink Marrucci bats signed by LSU football coach Les Miles, baseball coach Paul Mainieri and Girouard that will be part of a silent auction.
All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Baton Rouge Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
First pitch against the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on The X 104.5 and 104.9 in the Baton Rouge area. Patrick Wright , the voice of Tiger softball, will call the play-by-play action. LSU Senior Associate SID Kent Lowe makes his season debut as the color analyst.
