OXFORD, Miss. — Anissa Young went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lift the No. 17 LSU softball team to a 5-1 game two victory and a doubleheader split Tuesday at Ole Miss.
The Tigers (20-7, 7-3 SEC) dropped a 3-2 decision in 10 innings during game one and had its five-game winning streak come to a close.
“We had a golden opportunity to win the first game,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. ”Cody [Trahan] threw a magnificent game. A couple of pitches here and there made the difference. We were able to respond and scratch out a win in game two. We expect our players to produce, and we had some opportunities to bury them in the first game and didn’t execute.”
LSU returns to the new Tiger Park for a Thursday doubleheader against Mississippi Valley State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
Both games of the doubleheader will be broadcasted live on The X 104.5 and 104.9 in the Baton Rouge
area. Patrick Wright, the voice of Tiger softball, will call the play-by-play action. Live video is available in
the Geaux Zone and LSUSports.net will provide live stats.
Game 2 ? No. 17 LSU 5, Ole Miss 1
LSU grabbed a 1-0 edge in the third inning as Juliana Santos belted a one-out single to score Kirsten Shortridge, who opened the frame with an infield single. Santos stole second and came around to score on a Lauren Grill throwing error to make it 2-0.
Anissa Young knocked a pair of two-out singles up-the-middle scoring one run in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh inning to make it 5-1.
LSU’s Brittany Mack scattered two runs on six hits to improve to 8-1 on the season, while Lindsey Perry was tagged with the loss falling to 3-6 for Ole Miss.
The Rebels received RBIs from Grill in the fifth inning and Corrine Doornberg in the seventh inning for the final margin of 5-2.
Game 1 ? Ole Miss 3, No. 17 LSU 2 (10 Innings)
Alyssa McGovern knocked a two-out single to score Alise Doubt in the tenth inning to lift Ole Miss past LSU 3-2.
Cody Trahan was the tough-luck loser falling to 6-2 in the circle. She racked up eight strikeouts and limited the Rebels to only three hits in 9.2 innings of work. Becky Nye improved to 9-10 holding LSU to two runs on four hits.
Trahan carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Ole Miss took advantage of a leadoff walk to Lauren Grill. A single by Lisa Conchos along with an Ashley Dowdy sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out.
A RBI-groundout by Amber Tramp scored Grill, while pinch runner Amanda Hutcheson scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 2-2. Trahan regrouped and got Doubt to strike out to send the game to extra innings.
Reigning SEC and NFCA National Player of the Week Rachel Mitchell drew a leadoff walk and Ashley Langoni knocked her team-leading fifth home run of the season to give LSU a 2-0 lead. 10 of Langoni’s last 13 hits have produced runs for the Tigers.
