STATESBORO, Ga. — LSU freshman Sang Yi wrapped up the Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational on Sunday with a 1-over par round of 73 in the final round as the Carrollton, Texas, native earned his team-leading third Top 10 finish and his best finish of the season by tying for fourth place.
Yi paced the Tigers with a 54-hole score of 2-under 214 that included a 3-under 69 in Friday’s first round and an even-par 72 in Saturday’s second round at Forest Heights Country Club.
Yi improved from his previous best finish of the season when he tied for fifth place in leading the Tigers to the team championship in their season opener at the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 14. He also fired his lowest tournament score of his young career with his effort of 2-under 214.
The Tigers finished the weekend in a tie for 12th place after wrapping up the championship with a team score of 10-over 298 in the final round.
Sophomores John Peterson and Andrew Loupe each finished tied for 42nd place at 7-over 223 for the championship as Peterson wrapped up the event with a 1-over 73 and Loupe carded a 2-over 74 in the final round. Freshman Austin Gutgsell was tied for 68th place at 11-over 227, and fellow freshman Josh Jones placed 93rd with a cumulative score of 20-over 236 this weekend.
The 16th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks captured the team crown at this year’s Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational by two shots with a three-round total of 1-over 865. The 15th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and 14th-ranked NC State Wolfpack were two shots back in a tie for second place at 3-over 867, while ninth-ranked Florida (870) and Kentucky (875) round out the top five.
After entering the final round in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard, NC State’s Matt Hill earned a comfortable three-shot victory over South Carolina’s George Bryan IV following a 3-under 69 in the final round. Hill fired a 54-hole score of 7-under 209 for the championship.
The Tigers return to action next weekend as they travel to Awendaw, S.C., to compete in the fifth annual Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate to be held at Bulls Bay Golf Club from March 29-31.
