SORRENTO, Fla. — The 11th-ranked LSU women’s golf team finished on a high note in the UCF Classic firing a one-over par round of 289 on the final day to move up into a tie for sixth at the end of the 54-hole event.
LSU finished even with Florida for the sixth spot at 13-over par 877 after rounds of 286-302-289. Florida posted totals of292-293-292 for their 877 total. UCLA was the eventual winner posting a seven-under 181 on the final day to put three-under par rounds on the board, scoring a 14-under total for 54 holes of 850 (282-287-281). Arizona State took second at seven-under 857 and Oklahoma State was third at three-under 861.
“You have to like the way we finished (Tuesday),” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We battled back strongly and really only the first nine holes of the second round when we were 12 over was really the bad spot of the three days. We were able to play pretty consistently over the remaining 45 holes and battle back when something did happen. So I’m pretty pleased knowing we will not have a lot of time to work on things before we turn around and play again on Friday.”
Friday the Tigers begin play in the 28th LSU Golf Classic, being played for the 10th time at the University Club in Baton Rouge. LSU will be looking to win the event for the first time since 2005 and for the eighth time in the history of the tournament. The 54-hole event runs through Sunday and admission is free. The annual college-am tournament will be played on Thursday afternoon to kick off the event.
Sophomore Amalie Valle posted an under par 54 hole total of one-under 215 after an even par round of 72 (69-74-72) to finish in a group tied for 14th place. In all 20 golfers posted 54-hole totals of even or better with Stephanie Kono of UCLA making up seven shots on second-day leader Jessica Yadloczky of Florida to win the individual title. Kono had a six-under 66 and finished at eight-under 208 (71-71-66), one shot ahead of Yadloczky (66-70-73 ? 209). Kono started the day tied for 12th place.
Freshman Jacqueline Hedwall was under par on the final day, finishing with a one-under 71 and totaled out at three-over 219 (74-74-71). Tessa Teachman at 72 and Megan McChrystal had the other counting score of 74.
