PARRISH, Fla. — The 14th-ranked LSU women’s golf team put itself in good position after the first day of the Central District Invitational, standing in second place at the River Wilderness Golf Course.
It was a long day for the 15 teams as they played 36 holes of the 54-hole event with the final round scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Tigers shot rounds of four-over 292 and nine-over 297 to stand at 13-over par 589 after the two rounds. LSU is behind only the 10th-ranked Auburn Tigers who took the lead early with a four-under round and then shot seven over in the afternoon session to stand at three-over par 579, 10 shots ahead of LSU.
The LSU Tigers are two shots ahead of Purdue, three shots ahead of Duke and 12 shots ahead of host Michigan State in fifth place.
“It was a good opening for us,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We left a few strokes out there at the end, but overall did some good things. It was a long day and now we have to come back out (Tuesday) and grind through it to get the type of finish we want.”
LSU All-SEC sophomore Megan McChrystal started the spring right where she left off in the fall with a one-under round of 71. She posted a two-over 74 in the afternoon and her two-round total of one-over 145 stands in a group tied for fifth place, six shots out of the lead of Auburn’s Candace Schepperle at five under 139 (70-69).
Freshman Tessa Teachman is also in position for a top 10 finish after going 36 holes in four-over par. Teachman shot rounds of 73-75 for 148 and that is tied for eighth. Senior Caroline Martens shot two counting scores of 74 and 76, while Jacqueline Hedwall‘s 74 counted for the team score in the opening round with Amalie Valle coming back from an off morning to shoot even par 72 in the afternoon for the low team round of the session.
