LEXINGTON, Ky. — Senior Michael Venus of the LSU men’s tennis team notched three wins for the Tigers in day two of the Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Venus captured victory in two singles matches as well as notched a win with doubles partner Neal Skupski.
Top-seeded Venus defeated Kentucky’s Graeme Dyce, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the round of 32 before advancing over Ole Miss’ Chris Thiemann 6-3, 7-(6) in the round of 16.
As the No. 3 doubles seed, Venus and Skupski posted a 8-4 mark over Ole Miss’ Devin Britton and Otto Sauer to mark the LSU duo’s second win of the tournament.
In addition to LSU’s victories in the main draw, the Tigers posted four wins in the consolation brackets of the tournament.
Sophomore Sebastian Carlsson led LSU in the consolation rounds, marking two wins. After defeating Alabama’s Ricky Doverspike 4-6, 6-3, (8), Carlsson moved past Tennessee’s Jeremy Tweedt in a straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-4.
LSU freshman Mark Bowtell also notched a win in the first round of singles consolation with a victory over Kentucky’s Shane Collins 6-3, 6-2.
LSU’s James Cluskey and Julien Gauthier marked the Tiger’s fourth win in the consolation brackets after defeating Mississippi State’s Louis Cant and Alex Stump 8-6.
As the four Tigers move through the consolation brackets, Carlsson will take on MSU’s Antonio Lastre in singles as Bowtell faces Florida’s Jeff Dadamo. Cluskey and Gauthier will face Georgia’s Alex Hill and Borja Malo in doubles.
Venus will square off against MSU’s Louis Cant in a 9 a.m. CDT match held at the Hillary J. Boone Tennis Complex to determine who will advance to the semifinals. LSU’s duo of Skupski and Venus will face Georgia’s Jaime Hunt and Nate Schnugg at 12:30 p.m. in the doubles semi-final.
