BATON ROUGE — Nicole Smith and Megan Falcon of the LSU women’s tennis team each won a singles match on the third day of action at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic and ITA National Indoor Championships, respectively, on Saturday.
Smith, a freshman from South Africa, captured the consolation final in the Blue Draw at the SEC Classic by defeating Auburn’s Dunja Djuranovic in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4). Falcon, ranked No. 15 nationally, beat Notre Dame’s 43rd-ranked Kelcy Tefft, 6-4, 6-4, in the consolation semifinals at the Indoor Championships.
“Megan played a hard-fought match,” LSU assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “Her opponent made her fight for it, and I am looking forward to tomorrow because I know Megan is excited to play in the consolation final.”
Freshman Whitney Wolf picked up two wins at the SEC Classic as she won her consolation match in the White Draw against Mississippi State’s Olesya Tsigvintseva 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. In doubles, Wolf and junior Nicole Kantor paired up to beat Laura Van de Stroet and Mimi Renaudin of Ole Miss, 8-5, in the consolation of the Crimson Draw.
“I am satisfied with the play today because they played very well,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “Whitney and Nicole Kantor had a great doubles match, and Whitney and Nicole Smith closed out the tournament strong in singles.”
LSU concluded its stay at the SEC Classic, but Falcon will compete in the consolation final at the ITA Indoor Championships on Sunday at 8 a.m. CST against Georgia Tech’s third-ranked Amanda McDowell.
