WINDERMERE, Fla. — The 24th-ranked LSU men’s golf team kicked off play at the fifth-annual Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational on Sunday by finishing the first round in 16th place after posting a team total of 14-over par 302 at Isleworth Golf and Country Club.
The Tigers were led by the play of sophomore John Peterson, who fired a team-low 2-over 74 on the day to finish the first round in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings.
Peterson finished his round strong as he fired a 1-under 35 on his back nine after making the turn at 3-over par on the round. He went to 4-over through 11 holes before making birdie on three out of seven holes down the stretch to finish the day with a solid round of 2-over 74.
Three Tigers also holed out on No. 18 with matching scores of 4-over 76, including senior Jarrod Barsamian, freshman Josh Jones and freshman Sang Yi. The trio will open the second round of play on Monday in a tie for 47th place on the leaderboard. Sophomore Andrew Loupe added a 10-over 82 in the opening round to finish the day in a tie for 86th.
The sixth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide raced out to a two-shot lead after blistering the course with a 1-under 287 in the opening round. The 15th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers are two shots back in second place at 1-over 289, while third ranked Southern California is in third place at 2-over 290.
Only six golfers broke par in what proved to be a difficult opening round for the field as Indiana’s Jorge Campillo and Alabama’s Matthew Swan are in a tie for first place on the leaderboard after firing matching rounds of 4-under 68. Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway trails by one shot in third with a 3-under 69, while three players are tie for fourth place after firing a 1-under 71.
The Tigers are paired with Arizona and Charlotte in Monday’s second round and will tee off from the back nine beginning at 8:34 a.m. CT. Live scoring of the second and third rounds will again be provided by Golfstat and can be found online at www.golfstat.com.
