FORT WORTH, Texas — LSU’s 11th-ranked duo of Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg breezed past Texas A&M’s Christi Liles and Elze Potgieter 8-3 to advance to the semifinals in the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday.
The victory for the Lady Tiger tandem marked the third straight match they have won in 11 games or less as Falcon and Hedberg won the first two matches 8-1 and 8-2.
“Megan and Mykala played another outstanding match,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “They have worked hard and continue to complement each other very well on the court.”
In singles, No. 15 Falcon fell to TCU’s 47th-ranked Nina Munch-Soegaard 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the main draw.
Two other Lady Tigers had superb days in singles play as Nicole Kantor and Whitney Wolf both advanced to the finals of their respective consolation brackets. Kantor was dominant on the day as she defeated TCU’s Maria Babanova 6-4, 6-1 followed by a 6-1, 6-0 victory over TCU’s Idunn Hertzberg in the semifinals. Wolf beat the tournament’s No. 16 seed in Stephanie Davison of Texas 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals before sweeping Texas Tech’s Samantha VanderDrift 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.
“I was impressed with how Nicole and Whitney played,” Minnis said. “They both competed hard and came out on top. Now they just need to close it tomorrow.”
Falcon and Hedberg will face TCU’s Munch-Soegaard and Babanova in the semifinals on Monday. Kantor will play TCU’s Kayla Duncan in the finals of the west consolation bracket while Wolf will take on Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak in the finals of the north consolation draw.
All action will begin at 10 a.m.
