FORT WORTH, Texas — LSU women’s tennis players Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg advanced in doubles to the quarterfinal round of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional while Falcon advanced to the quarterfinals in singles on day three at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Saturday.
Fifteenth-ranked Falcon won two matches on the day, beating Texas’ Sarah Lancaster in the second round 6-3, 6-4 and then sweeping Texas A&M’s Christi Liles 6-2, 6-1 to advance.
In doubles, 11th-ranked Falcon and Hedberg had an easy time for the second straight day by cruising past Northwestern State’s Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz 8-2.
“Megan and Mykala played great today,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “With Megan playing two singles matches as well as a doubles match, she did a great job of playing a high level of tennis. Overall, I was pleased with how everyone played, but we need to keep it going tomorrow.”
In consolation singles action, Nicole Kantor picked up two wins to advance to the quarterfinals. Kantor beat Stephen F. Austin’s Alina Shazhko in a three-set super tiebreaker 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 and followed that by breezing past A&M’s Ashley Turpin in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Hedberg also advanced to the quarterfinals as she won by default over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Erika Iriate in the round of 32 before sweeping Amanda Craddock of Texas 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 16.
Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday with quarterfinal singles action.
