FORT WORTH, Texas — Two LSU women’s tennis players advanced to the second round of singles play while two doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 to highlight LSU’s second day at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Friday.
No. 15 Megan Falcon won her opening match of the tournament, defeating North Texas’ Irina Paraschiv in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Whitney Wolf advanced to the second round as well with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win over UTEP’s Weronika Bolczynska.
Sloane Mathis, who advanced to the round of 16 in the qualifier’s consolation bracket on Thursday, pulled out another grueling three-set win as she knocked off Texas-San Antonio’s Micaela Silva 7-6, 5-7, 10-7 to move on to the quarterfinals.
In doubles, 11th-ranked Falcon and Mykala Hedberg breezed past Texas-Arlington’s Nikola Matovicova and Sara Pesic by an 8-1 mark to move into the round of 32. Nicole Kantor and Wolf teamed up to beat Rice’s Emily Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar 8-2 to join Falcon and Hedberg in the second round.
“Overall we played very well today,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We came out focused and ready to compete in most of the matches, so hopefully we can pick it up a little and go play our best tennis tomorrow.”
