FORT WORTH, Texas — Three LSU women’s tennis team players won a singles and doubles match on the first day of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Thursday.
After dropping her first match in the qualifying singles bracket, Sloane Mathis rallied for a hard-fought, three-set victory in the first round of the consolation bracket. Mathis defeated UTEP’s Megan Pritchard 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a third-set super tiebreaker.
In the first round of the doubles draw, Nicole Kantor and Whitney Wolf rolled past Texas-San Antonio’s Caroline Dedering and Monika Drabkova 8-3 to advance to the second round on Friday.
“I was really pleased with how Nicole and Whitney played today,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “We have a lot of matches tomorrow, so we need to come out focused and ready to play.”
Mathis will take on Micaela Silva from UTSA in the round of 32 in the consolation bracket on Friday at 9 a.m. CDT. Kantor and Wolf will face Rice’s Emily Braid and Varsha Shiva-Shankar at noon in the second round on Friday.
Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg will take to the courts for the first time in the tournament on Friday as both will compete in main draw singles and doubles. In doubles, the 11th-ranked duo will face Texas-Arlington’s Nikola Matovicova and Sara Pesic at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 32. In singles, 15th-ranked Falcon will open up against Irina Paraschiv of North Texas at 3:30 p.m. Hedberg will face the tournament’s 15th-seed Macall Harkins of TCU at 2:30 p.m.
“Megan and Mykala have had a break since the All-American tournament, so this will be a great opportunity for them to get going again and hopefully pick up some wins,” Minnis said.
