Sixty-Six Named to SEC Spring Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 66 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2008 Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Tuesday.

The national champion LSU women’s track team and the Tiger baseball team, which advanced to the College World Series for the first time since 2004, topped the list of spring programs with 14 members each on the Honor Roll.

Among the members of the baseball team to make the list were Matt Clark, Jared Bradford, Ryan Verdugo, Michael Hollander and Ryan Schmipf. All-American Angel Boyd highlighted the women’s track list, having finished second as member of the 4×100-meter relay team, fifth in the 200 meters and seventh in the 100 meters as the Lady Tigers won their 14th NCAA Outdoor National Championship 10 days ago.

The men’s track team, which finished tied for second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, had 13 members selected to the team including a trio of NCAA Championship participants. In addition, seven members of the men’s golf team made the list, while six member of the women’s tennis team were honored, including Louisiana Player of the Year Megan Falcon. Four members of the nationally ranked softball team, women’s golf team and men’s tennis team were also on the list.

A total of 940 student-athletes were named to the 2008 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. South Carolina topped the list with 105 student-athletes on the spring academic roster. Georgia was next with 96 honorees, followed closely by Florida with 93 spring student-athletes honored. Both South Carolina and Georgia field equestrian teams in the spring that figure into their total number of spring honor roll recipients.

Each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

The 2008 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2007 Summer, 2007 Fall and 2007 Spring terms.
