BREMERTON, Wash. — The LSU men’s golf team posted a team score of 25-over par 313 on Friday at Gold Mountain Golf Club to finish the second round of the 2008 NCAA West Regional in 24th place with a two-day total of 41-over 617.
Junior Jarrod Barsamian matched his first-round score of 5-over 77 to lead the Tigers in the second round and tallied a 36-hole score of 10-over 154. Despite some early struggles on the back-nine, the native of Ponte Vedra, Fla., finished the round strong with birdies on the par-three fifth and par-five ninth holes.
After firing an even-par 72 in Thursday’s opening round, John Peterson carded a 6-over 78 to finish in a tie for 51th place at 6-over 150. The freshman, who concluded the first round in an eighth-place tie, was unable to carry over his hot start as he notched only one birdie on the day.
Freshman Clayton Rotz and senior Brian Noonan each closed seven strokes over par to post two-round totals of 13-over 157 and 14-over 158, respectively. Freshman Andrew Loupe finished with an 11-over 83 on Friday.
Teams from the Pac-10 conference continued to dominate the West Regional as four squads represent the league in the top five of the team standings after Friday’s action. Southern California claimed the top spot at 2-under 574 heading into Saturday’s final-round action after the Trojans blistered the course with a 5-under 283.
Oregon currently sits five shots off the lead in second place at 3-over 579. Clemson, UCLA and tournament host Washington round out the top-five.
The top-10 squads from the 27-team field will qualify for the 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships to be held at Boilermaker Golf Club in West Lafayette, Ind., from May 28-31.
Oregon’s Joey Benedetti remains atop the individual standings for the second straight day as the senior fired his second-straight round of 3-under 69 to card a sizzling two-day total of 6-under 138. Wisconsin’s Dan Woltman is one shot back at 5-under 139, and Washington’s Nick Taylor follows in third place at 4-under 140.
The top two individuals not among the top 10 teams will also advance to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The Tigers will tee off alongside Denver and UNLV in the Saturday’s final round as they start from the front nine at 2:59 p.m. CDT. Live scoring of the NCAA West Regional is provided by Golfstat and can be found online by logging on to www.golfstat.com.
