Four Athletes Named to SEC Indoor All-Freshman Team

BATON ROUGE — The LSU track and field team may have wrapped up the indoor season two weeks ago, but the Tigers and Lady Tigers continue to receive recognition for their performance as four athletes have been named to the SEC Indoor All-Freshman Team.

This marks the first year that the SEC has put together an All-Freshman Team as it honors the league’s top freshman finisher in each individual event at the 2008 SEC Indoor Championships.

Tenaya Jones was the Lady Tigers’ top performer at the meet as she finish third in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.30 seconds in the final. LSU made a statement by finishing 1-2-3 in the event with senior Jessica Ohanaja successfully defending her title and junior Nickiesha Wilson earning all-conference honors with a runner-up finish.

Melissa Ogbourne was one of only three athletes to earn two All-Freshman honors as she was the league’s top freshman in both the long jump and triple jump. Ogbourne followed a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a 10th-place finish in the triple jump.

In addition, Brittany Hall earned an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run. The trio helped the Lady Tigers end a nine-year drought with their first SEC Indoor title since the 1999 season.

While the Lady Tigers led the league with four selections to the SEC Indoor All-Freshman Team on the women’s side, the Tigers featured one selection of their own as jumps standout Zedric Thomas recorded a new overall personal best of 50 feet, 5 ? inches to take fifth place in the triple jump. Thomas also competed in the long jump at the SEC meet.
