ATHENS, Ga. — The 19th-ranked LSU Tigers battled the winds over the always difficult University of Georgia golf course Saturday, falling from the lead to sixth place after the second round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
The Lady Tigers were forced to count two scores in the 80s for the first time this spring on a day when the average score for the day was over 80. LSU shot 28-over 316 in the second round to stand at 37-over par 613. Host Georgia shot the co-low round of the day and it was 12-over 300 to stand in first at 26-over 602.
The Lady Bulldogs are three shots ahead of Purdue at 605, with Alabama at 609, Kent State at 610 and Arkansas at 612. LSU is one shot ahead of Duke and Auburn in a tie for seventh at 614.
Lindy LaBauve, after posting the non-counting score on Friday, had the best score of three-over 75 and her score of 155 is the best of the team through 36 holes and is tied for 25th in the individual standings. Freshman Megan McChrystal was the most affected by the swirling winds with an 87 after a first day 69 that her in the tournament lead. She’s in a group in a tie for 31st at 156 along with Rebecca Kuhn (77-79 ? 156) and Caroline Martens (75-81). Alexis Rather is one more shot back at 157 (76-81).
“The winds were really swirling all over the golf course,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “And that can be the one factor here that cause everyone tons of problems as seen by how high the scores were. We just couldn’t catch a break in the round but we’ll give it a good run on Sunday.”
The final round is set for a shotgun start on Sunday morning. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
