FSU Expands Lead at Cleveland Classic; Logjam For Second

BATON ROUGE — The Florida State Seminoles looked to put its stamp on the 27th annual LSU-Cleveland Golf Classic by widening its lead going into Sunday’s finale at the University Club.

The Seminoles, the only team to ever win three consecutive LSU events from 1987-89 in the days of the old LSU-Fairwood Invitational, is 18 holes away from its fourth LSU title after posting a six-over 294 following Friday’s 293 and stands at 11-over par 587 after 36 holes.

The battle behind the Seminoles is also very interesting as Alabama posted a nine-over 297 to move to second at 23-over 599, 12 shots out of first, but just one shot ahead of LSU and Wake Forest (600), with Georgia and North Carolina State just one more shot back at 601. Even Louisville at 26-over 602 and North Carolina at 27-over 603 are certainly in the battle for second.

The Sunday question, with all 17 teams on the course at once in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., with a lead like this is always will the leader come back and will someone make the big move.

The Seminoles are helped by having two golfers in the top five and remarkably the one in the lead after Friday’s first round is now fifth and the one fifth Friday is now tied for the lead. Caroline Westrup posted the day’s best round of four-under 68 to tie for the lead with Lauren Doughtie of North Carolina State (72-69) at three-under 141. Whitney Wright, after a tied for the lead opening 70, shot a three-over 75 and after two rounds is at one-over 145.

LSU senior Rebecca Kuhn, a former runner up in the LSU-Cleveland Classic, is very much in position to challenge for the individual title after shooting a one-over 73 on Saturday and stands in solo fourth place at even par 144.

Alabama counted two par scores of 72 that got them on the way to their round of 297 that put them in second place.

The Lady Tigers, besides the 73 of Kuhn, picked up a 74 from freshman Megan McChrystal, a 76 from senior Alexis Rather and a 77 from Amalie Valle as LSU shot 12-over par for the second straight day. McChrystal, the team’s leading stroke average player, is 17th in the individual competition.

“We’ll be ready for the final round Sunday,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “The main thing is that we will come out and play the golf course and not Florida State or anyone else. We need to worry about us and play the type of golf we are capable of. I know what we can do and we intend to do that on Sunday and let everything else take care of itself.”

The final round of play begins a half-hour later than the first two rounds at 8:30 a.m. with all players on the course. Live scoring can be found at LSUSports.net through golfstats.com
