BATON ROUGE — Quarterback Matt Flynn and Lady Tigers center Sylvia Fowles were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Wednesday following a vote by a local media panel.
Flynn guided the Tigers to their second BCS National Championship in four years, completing 19-of-27 passes for 174 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in LSU’s decisive 38-24 victory over Ohio State last week. After being down 10-0 just six minutes into the game, the senior from Tyler, Texas engineered an offense that rattled off 31 unanswered that would put the game out reach for the Buckeyes. For his efforts, Flynn was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player on offense.
Fowles led the Lady Tigers to a pair of victories over Arkansas and Vanderbilt in the first week of league play, averaging 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. The senior from Miami, Fla., extended her streak of SEC games with a double double to 18 straight, the longest streak in league history. In addition, Fowles became LSU’s all-time leader in double doubles for her career, with 70, a total that also ranks second in SEC history and moved up to fifth on LSU’s career scoring list with 1,864 points.
