BATON ROUGE — When the LSU football team woke up this morning on the first day of 2008, the schedule called for a 2 p.m. team meeting followed by a two-hour practice.

LSU coach Les Miles had something else in store for the Tigers on Tuesday. Following the 2 p.m. team meeting in the Lawton Room at the Football Operations Building, Miles had the Tigers report to the Indoor Practice Facility where a pair of banners ? one reading 2007 SEC Western Division Champions and the other 2007 SEC Champions ? were unveiled by the permanent team captains with the rest of the team looking on.

After a brief talk with the team, Miles then called the squad up and cancelled practice, much to the surprise of the team.

“This (no practice) is exactly what this team needed,” Miles said as he walked off the field at the indoor practice facility.

LSU will return to practice on Wednesday as the Tigers get back into their game-week routine. Wednesday’s practice will be a typical “Tuesday type” workout for the Tigers as the squad will workout in full gear. It will also serve as LSU’s final workout on campus as they will report to New Orleans on Wednesday afternoon.

LSU will begin its New Orleans preparations for the BCS National Championship Game on Thursday as the Tigers will hold the first of what will be four workouts in the Louisiana Superdome.

LSU and Ohio State will meet for the national title on Monday, Jan. 7 at the Louisiana Superdome. The game will be televised to a national audience by FOX.
