BATON ROUGE — LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey made the cut for two more national awards on Monday as he was named a finalist for both the Outland Trophy and the Bednarik Award.
Dorsey is also a finalist for both the Lombardi Award as well as the Nagurski Trophy running. In all, Dorsey is a finalist for a total of four national awards.
Dorsey, a senior from Gonzales, La., is one of three finalists for the prestigious Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. The winner of the Outland Trophy, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America, will be announced on Dec. 6 at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla.
Dorsey is the anchor of an LSU defense that is currently ranked among the top 10 in the nation in five categories, including a No. 2 rating in total defense and a No. 4 ranking in rush defense.
In 11 games this year, Dorsey has recorded 55 tackles, 11.5 tackles for losses and six sacks for the top-ranked Tigers. He’s also batted down four passes at the line of scrimmage and added four quarterback hurries.
Dorsey has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week one time this year as well as being named the league’s defensive lineman of the week once.
Other finalists for the Outland Trophy include Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long and Kansas offensive tackle Anthony Collins.
The Outland Trophy, which has been awarded annually by the FWAA since 1946, is named after the late John Outland, a lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century. The Outland Trophy is the third oldest award in major college football behind the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award.
The official 2007 award presentation will be Jan. 10, 2008, in Omaha, Neb., at a banquet sponsored by The Greater Omaha Sports Committee. Oklahoma’s Lee Roy Selmon, the 1975 Outland Trophy winner, is expected to receive his trophy there.
The Bednarik Trophy is presented annually to the outstanding defensive player in college football by the Maxwell Memorial Football Club. Other finalists for the Bednarik Trophy include Penn State linebacker Dan Connor and Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis.
The winner of the Bednarik Trophy will be announced at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Show in Orlando on Dec. 6.
