IRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU swimmer Hannes Heyl has been named the Southeastern Conference Male Freshman Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Heyl, a native of Grosslehna, Germany, won two individual events in leading 19th-ranked LSU to a 195-89 victory over Delta State last Friday in Baton Rouge.
Heyl led a 1-2-3 scoring effort by LSU in the 50 freestyle with a winning mark of 21.26. The talented freshman also won the 200 backstroke with a three-second cushion by recording a time of 1:52.99. Both of those times ranked in the SEC top 15 clockings of each respective event.
Heyl also ranks eighth in the league in the 100 back (50.87), and he holds the 11th-best 100 free time in the SEC (45.96).
Heyl is the third LSU swimmer in as many weeks to receive recognition from the SEC. Kevin Braud was named SEC Male Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 16, and Katherine Noland was named SEC Female Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 24.
LSU returns to SEC action this Friday as the Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama at 3 p.m. The LSU women will also face Vanderbilt on Friday.
