LUBBOCK, Texas — Led by the superb play of sophomore Ashley Murdock, the LSU women’s tennis team finished a successful day one at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday.
Murdock, a native of Memphis, Tenn., opened the day with a first round victory in the qualifying singles bracket by knocking off Vicky Simpson of Houston 6-4, 7-5. Murdock followed the win by beating Alexandra Dyckman of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Murdock will face eighth-seeded Kristen Reid of SMU in the Round of 16.
“It was a really good day today,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “Ashley won two matches, and hopefully she can win one more and qualify for the main draw.”
In doubles play, Hannah Robinson and Tiffany Tucker defeated Julie Mazinova and Myrthe Molenveld of UL-Lafayette 8-4. The tandem moves into the second round to face the tournament’s seventh-seeded duo of Janet Durham and Kelsy Garland of the tournament host school, Texas Tech.
Play resumes tomorrow with singles action at 9 a.m. and doubles at 12:30 p.m. The singles main draw will begin at 3 p.m.
