BATON ROUGE — For the second time in its history, the LSU Soccer Complex will be the host site of a match featuring a Major League Soccer powerhouse as the New England Revolution takes on the New Orleans Shell Shockers on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m.
The match will be held in Baton Rouge as a way to introduce the region to the level of competition it can expect from its own newly established United Soccer Premier Development League team ? the Baton Rouge Capitals under the direction of general manager Gary Buete.
“We’re excited to be a part of such a great event for the Baton Rouge soccer community,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “Gary Buete and the Baton Rouge Soccer Association have worked hard to spearhead an event that will showcase the very best of American soccer right here in our own backyard. It should be a great night of high-quality soccer for all to come and see.”
New England boasts one of the most storied clubs in the 11-year history of Major League Soccer as the Revolution were MLS Cup champions following the 2002 season, while they are also the two-time defending MLS Eastern Conference champions and back-to-back MLS Cup finalists in 2005 and 2006.
The New Orleans Shell Shockers also compete in the highly-competitive Mid-South Division of the Southern Conference in the US Premier Development League and are coached by Kenny Farrell, who is one of the two original founding members of the club and the 2003 PDL Coach of the Year after guiding the team to more wins than any other team in the country that year.
The LSU soccer team and the LSU Soccer Complex also played host for an MLS exhibition match prior to the 2003 season between the Chicago Fire and the Colorado Rapids, which featured the talents of U.S. National Team star and 2006 FIFA World Cup participant DaMarcus Beasley.
