BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team defeated Northwestern State, 6-1, in their first home match on Thursday improving their record to 3-1.
“We played well. We did what we had to do and I was happy to come away with the win,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “It was a good match to get us ready for the tough matches we have coming up this weekend.”
The Lady Tigers jumped ahead by sweeping doubles play to grab the first point. On court three freshman Nicole Kantor and sophomore Mykala Hedberg grabbed the first win for LSU defeating their opponents Magali Van den Bergh and Marine Neveu, 8-1.
On court one junior Tiffany Tucker and her partner Ashley Murdock secured the doubles point for LSU as they defeated Marie Scriba and Bogusia Patzer, 8-1.
Doubles play rounded up on court two as sophomore Megan Falcon and junior Anastasiya Dubova fought to defeat the Demon’s Catalina Villegas and Daniela Posada, 8-4.
In singles play the Lady Tigers grabbed five of the six matches in straight sets.
Dubova finished first on court six knocking off Posada, 6-2, 6-1. Tucker and Hedberg finished shortly after securing the win for LSU. On court four Tucker defeated Neveu, 6-1, 6-2, and on court two, No. 83 Hedberg won against Bogusia Patzer, 6-2, 6-1.
Kantor battled Villegas on court three winning the match 6-4, 6-0. On court one, No. 10. Falcon downed Scribe in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
On court five Murdock won her first set 6-4. She then lost the second set by that same score. A 10-point tiebreaker would determine the match. Murdock battled back from a 9-5 deficit to tie the score at 9-9. Unfortunately, she could not hold on as she lost the next two points to Northwestern’s Van den Bergh.
Up next, the Lady Tigers will travel to Houston to face No. 69 Rice on Saturday, Feb 17, at 1:30 p.m. CST and the University of Houston on Monday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m.
