ATHENS, Ga. — LSU’s seventh-ranked women’s basketball team begins a two-game road swing on Thursday when they visit No. 14 Georgia in a Southeastern Conference showdown at 6 p.m. CST in Stegeman Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers (20-2, 6-1 SEC) have won five straight games, including a pair of victories at home last week, 70-53 over Arkansas and 65-45 over Auburn.
Georgia (18-4, 5-2 SEC) has won four in a row, including home wins over Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
“It is a challenge to go on the road and it is a challenge any time we match-up with Georgia,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “It is going to be a battle. They present so many challenges with their front line and their experience in the back court. We will have to be ready because Georgia is playing tremendous basketball right now.”
The Lady Bulldogs are led by junior forward Tasha Humphrey and senior guard Cori Chambers. Humphrey has scored 15.8 points and grabbed 7.4 rebounds per game this season, while Chambers has posted 14.0 points and has hit 40.5 percent from three-point range.
Sylvia Fowles leads the Lady Tigers with 17.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. The 6-6 junior center is first in scoring and rebounding in SEC games with 17.7 points and 14.0 rebounds.
Quianna Chaney has averaged 12.2 points per game overall this season and has scored 14.9 in LSU’s seven conference games.
This will be the second meeting between the rivals this season. LSU won 57-55 in Baton Rouge to open league play on Jan. 7. Fowles led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Chaney posted 15 points and Allison Hightower scored 12 off the bench. Christy Marshall led Georgia with 12 points.
Overall, the Lady Bulldogs lead the series, 18-14, but LSU has won six straight and seven of the last eight meetings. Georgia also owns a 10-4 advantage in Athens.
LSU sits all alone in second-place in the SEC standings, while Georgia is tied for third with Ole Miss. Tennessee, who hosts South Carolina on Thursday, sits on top with a 6-0 mark.
Thursday’s game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net (cable channel 38 in Baton Rouge) and can be heard on the radio at 107.3 FM or in the Geauxzone on www.LSUsports.net.
Following the game, LSU will travel to Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m. CST.
