STARKVILLE, Miss. — Four LSU women’s basketball players scored in double figures led by Sylvia Fowles 16 points to lift the Lady Tigers to a 77-50 victory at Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon in Humphrey Coliseum.
In addition to Fowles, who collected a double double with 11 rebounds to go with her 16 points, Allison Hightower scored a career-high 14 points, Quianna Chaney had 13 and Porsha Phillips added 10 points in the victory for the Lady Tigers (16-2, 2-1 SEC).
Khalilah Mitchell added a career-best nine points off the bench and Ashley Thomas had seven points.
“We are moving in the proper direction but maybe not at the pace I would like,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “We started the game off executing well, but we are trying to get our team to not play in spurts. I felt like we had some good spurts today and we are trying to get the spurts to last as close to 40 minutes as possible.”
LSU trailed early 5-4 after four minutes of the game, but used a 21-0 run to take a 25-5 lead with just under seven minutes left in the half.
Mississippi State (10-7, 1-2 SEC) outscored LSU 13-8 in the final seven minutes of the half to trail 33-19 at the break.
The Lady Tigers opened the second half on a 6-0 run that basically put the game away, giving LSU a 20-point lead. Mississippi State scored the next basket to cut the lead back to 19, but the Lady Bulldogs would not get any closer.
LSU’s largest lead of 75-43 came with just over two minutes to play.
Lauren Roberts led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points off the bench. MSU shot 32.1 percent from the field in the game and committed 19 turnovers.
The Lady Tigers shot 50.8 percent from the floor, including 60.6 percent in the second half. LSU won the battle of the boards 45-27.
The victory for LSU was the program’s 15th straight over Mississippi State and the seventh straight in Humphrey Coliseum.
The Lady Tigers will host Kentucky on Thursday at 7 p.m. CST in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
