BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Tasmin Mitchell and Sylvia Fowles were named the Men’s and Women’s Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, it was announced on Wednesday.
Mitchell, a 6-7 forward for the Tigers, helped LSU in a split over Texas schools last week. The Demham Springs, La., native has 15 points and nine rebounds in the victory over No. 6 Texas A&M and then poured in a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six assists in the overtime loss to Texas. His double double against the Longhorns was the third of his career.
Fowles, a 6-6 junior center for the Lady Tigers, led LSU to a 75-51 victory over No. 5 Ohio State with a game-high 18 points on 8-13 shooting and added 16 rebounds. The Miami, Fla., native was also named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for her efforts that included scoring eight points and grabbing seven boards during LSU’s 23-4 run in the middle of the game to pull away from the Buckeyes.
The LSWA selects a weekly Player of the Week for men’s and women’s basketball from a list of nominations submitted by the state schools.
