Davis, Fowles Named LSU Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU basketball players Glen Davis and Sylvia Fowles were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Davis, a Baton Rouge native, led the Tigers to a split week as they upset sixth-ranked Texas A&M Tuesday night in PMAC before enduring a narrow, one-point overtime defeat to Texas Sunday evening in Houston.

Against the Aggies, Davis scored a game-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal in helping the Tigers’ secure the victory. He followed that with a 21-point, 10-rebound performance against the Longhorns.

The pair of double-doubles mark the 33rd and 34th of Davis’ career. The junior forward has also now scored 20 or points in three straight contests.

Fowles, a junior center for the Lady Tigers, led LSU to a dominating 75-51 win over fifth-ranked Ohio State on Sunday. The Miami, Fla., native turned in a game-high 18 points and 16 rebounds on eight-of-13 shooting against the Buckeyes.

Defensively, Fowles was just as impressive, holding All-American center Jessica Davenport to just six points in the first half while racking up 14 of her 16 rebounds on the defensive end of the court.

With her performance Fowles moved into eighth place on LSU’s career rebounds list (839) and improved to 18th on the Lady Tigers’ career scoring list, with 1,165 points.
