Landry Named LSWA Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Junior running back Calvin Dawson of Louisiana-Monroe and LSU free safety LaRon Landry earned the final 2006 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors announced on Monday.

Dawson rushed for 117 yards on 23 carries and one score in a 23-3 win for the Warhawks over North Texas this past Saturday. On the season, Dawson has a league-leading 1,081 yards and is the first 1,000-yard back at ULM since Bryant Jacobs (1,043 yards) in the 2002 season. The game also marked Dawson’s sixth 100-yard performance of the season.

Landry was an integral part of the Tiger defense in the 31-26 win over Arkansas this Friday that raised LSU’s BCS ranking to No. 5. The senior from Ama, La., led LSU with nine tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception. His fourth quarter interception was returned 23 yards to the Arkansas nine to set up an LSU touchdown. The interception was the 11th of his career, the fifth-highest total in school history.

Others receiving votes on offense were Trindon Holliday of LSU and Tyrell Fenroy of Louisiana-Lafayette.
