WACO, Texas — LSU’s ninth-ranked women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, 64-60, to No. 15 Baylor on Tuesday night in the Farrell Center.
Despite Sylvia Fowles‘ foul trouble and a poor shooting night, The Lady Tigers (5-1) were able to stay the game the entire way, including trailing by one point with 1:45 to play, but could not capitalize, missing a 10 foot jumper with one minute to play that would have tied the score. Baylor (4-1) then connected on four of six free throw attempts in the final minute.
“We were fortunate that this was only a four point ball game,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “At times we were not playing very intelligently. We weathered the storm of early foul trouble, but did not really capitalize on it. That is an area that has to be corrected.”
Fowles played just 17 minutes because of foul trouble and had 14 points and four rebounds. The 6-6 junior picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game, sending her to the bench for the remainder of the half. The Miami native then was called for her third foul early in the second half and her fourth at the 11:16 mark.
Erica White was LSU’s spark with a career-high 20 points, five rebounds and two steals.
RaShonta LeBlanc added nine points and four rebounds for LSU.
Bernice Mosby led Baylor (4-1) with 21 points and 17 rebounds.
LSU shot a season-low 37.1 percent from the floor, hitting just 23 of 62 shots, including two of 17 from three-point land.
Baylor shot 38.3 percent from the floor, including 50.0 percent in the second half. The Lady Bears outrebounded LSU, 53-31.
“We ran up against a very good team tonight,” Chatman said. “They we inspired coming off a loss and we did not capitalize on anything. We will get it corrected and be better our next time out.”
The Lady Tigers travel to San Antonio next to face Tulsa on Friday at 5 p.m. CST in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.
