Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at Match Play

ORLANDO, Fla. — The LSU women’s golf team took home sixth place in the Hooters National Match Play Championship after falling to Auburn in the “B” Consolation final Sunday at the Eagle Creek Golf Course.

Auburn won four of the five singles matches and won by a score of 4.5-0.5 as the number three seed downed 12th-seeded LSU. LSU finished with a 2-2 record in the three-day event. LSU finished the event with an overall record of 8-8-4.

LSU’s only point in the match came in the second match as Nicola Eaton posted an all square match to get a half with Candace Schepperle. Kim Meck, who had been undefeated over the weekend, finally lost her first match, 3 and 2, to Abigale Schepperle of Auburn.

“It was a good weekend for us overall,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen as her team completes its fall season of play. “To finish sixth in this elite field is another step forward for us and the event shows the depth of the Southeastern Conference. We had some very solid moments for us and now look forward to coming back in the spring for some very important tournaments for our team.”

Included in that will be hosting the annual edition of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge in mid-March and the Lady Tigers will for the third time (second time at the U-Club) host the NCAA East Women’s Golf Regional in May.

Duke downed Vanderbilt, 3-2, to win the overall championship with Duke getting wins in No. 2, 4 and 5 singles to win the title. Duke was the second seed and Vandy the fourth seed. In the third place match top-seed Georgia downed Michigan State 3.5-1.5, while Florida won the consolation title and ninth place with a 3-2 win over Wake Forest.
