BATON ROUGE — A two-run double by infielder Jeffrey Garidel highlighted a six-run fourth inning Tuesday as the Purple team defeated the Gold squad, 8-3, in Game 2 of the LSU Baseball Purple vs. Gold World Series at Alex Box Stadium.
The Purple team’s victory evened the series at one game apiece after the Gold captured the first game, 7-0, on Monday. The Purple vs. Gold World Series, a three-game intrasquad series that culminates LSU’s fall baseball practice period, concludes with the championship game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Fans are invited to attend Wednesday’s contest free of charge.
The Purple took advantage of three Gold errors in the fourth inning Tuesday to erase a 3-0 deficit. Garidel’s double was the key hit of the rally, which also included an RBI single by outfielder Steven Broschofsky.
“The Purple made a nice comeback today after being shut out yesterday,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “I was disappointed, though, in the way the Gold team played. The mistakes on defense were really critical, and that demonstrates a lack of consistency. It shows we have a long way to go to develop the consistency necessary for success.”
Junior right-hander Jared Bradford, the Purple’s starting pitcher, earned the victory in the six-inning contest, working three scoreless innings after allowing three runs in the first inning.
“I thought Jared did a nice job after running into some tough luck in the first inning,” Mainieri said. “He kept his team in the game and allowed them to make the comeback.”
