BATON ROUGE — The Purple vs. Gold World Series, a three-game intrasquad series that culminates LSU’s fall baseball practice period, begins at 3 p.m. Monday in Alex Box Stadium.
The series continues with the second game at 3 p.m. Tuesday and concludes with the final game at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Fans are invited to attend all games of the Purple vs. Gold World Series free of charge.
The series will officially wrap up LSU’s fall practice period, which began on October 1.
“We’ve had a very productive fall practice,” said first-year LSU coach Paul Mainieri, “and we’ve learned a lot about our players. These final three games are designed to place some pressure on the players to gauge how they perform in a more intense atmosphere.”
Mainieri said that senior left-hander Clay Dirks, a 2005 All-SEC selection, will be the Gold’s starting pitcher on Monday. Dirks will be opposed by Purple starter Charlie Furbush, a junior left-hander who transferred to LSU this fall from Saint Joseph’s College of Maine.
LSU assistant coaches Blair Barbier (Purple) and Cliff Godwin (Gold) will serve as the teams’ managers for the series. Games 1 and 2 of the series will be six-inning contests, and Game 3 is scheduled for seven innings.
LSU will begin the 2007 regular season on February 9, when the Tigers play host to Saint Mary’s (Calif.) in Alex Box Stadium.
