ATHENS, Ga. — The LSU soccer team, which fell to the 14th-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Friday, dropped its second straight match in the Southeastern Conference with a 3-0 shutout at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday at the Turner Soccer Complex.
The Tigers fall to 7-6-2 on the season and are now an even 2-2-2 with eight points in SEC play, while the Bulldogs snap their four-game SEC losing streak and improve to 7-6-0 and 2-4-0 in conference action with six points.
“Georgia is a really good team and has been a bit unlucky this year with some of their results,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “They played very well today and showed the kind of potential that their young team has. They’re on the outside looking in right now, but will be in the top eight for the SEC Tournament by the end of the year.”
Freshman forward Carrie Patterson scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season for the Bulldogs with her first goal of the match coming in the 37th minute after gathering a loose ball in the six-yard box and blasting a shot into the back of the net from point-blank range. Patterson added her second goal in the 48th minute with a shot from the top of the penalty box.
Junior transfer Ashley Stinson added Georgia’s third goal of the match in the 83rd minute of play when she took an end line cross from Patterson and finished her fifth goal of the season with a shot from six yards in front of the net.
The Tigers were limited to just 10 total shots in the match with six shots on goal and one corner kick, while the Bulldogs held the advantage on the offensive end with 15 total shots and nine shots on goal with seven corner kicks. A total of 24 fouls were called and three yellow cards were issued for the duration of the match.
“We’ve just got to put this game behind us and move forward because we’re still in a position to accomplish a lot of great things this year,” Lee said. “We’re excited to get back to Baton Rouge and play a few games in front of the home crowd. We need to come out with some intensity and compete for 90 minutes to get back on the winning track.”
The Tigers return to Baton Rouge for the first time in three weeks as they welcome a pair of SEC Western Division rivals to the LSU Soccer Complex. They will play host to the Auburn Tigers on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by a match against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sunday at 1 p.m.
