Gaston Eliminated From Pro Futures Main Draw

IRVINE, Calif. — Junior Colt Gaston of the LSU men’s tennis team was eliminated from the main draw of the Racquet Club of Irvine Meyer Pharmaceutical Pro Futures by losing in a three-set match. Gaston was the last Tiger competing in the event.

“It was a nice tournament for Colt and he continues to improve each time he steps on the court,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said.

In the first set, Gaston held his own against veteran Bruno Rodriguez by notching two early points, but could not come out on top as he lost the set, 6-2. Gaston fired back in the second set, winning the set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).

Gaston was not able to get the upper hand in the third set as Rodriquez raced out to a big lead and never looked back, taking the set by a 6-2 count.

Brown said Gaston’s loss did not diminish his team’s stellar tournament performance where they picked up 10 wins in the five days they competed in the event.

“All of our guys competing had at least one strong match and the trip was well worth it,” he said. “This experience should pay dividends in the future.”

The next action for the Tigers will be this Saturday in the pre-qualifying rounds of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis in Tulsa, Okla.
