IRVINE, Calif. — Junior Colt Gaston of the LSU men’s tennis team qualified for the main draw of the Racquet Club of Irvine Meyer Pharmaceutical Pro Futures by winning his fourth-straight three set match.

“Colt is really developing into an all-around player,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “I am sure going three sets in all of his matches has taken a toll on him but I think with a good night of rest he will be fine for tomorrow’s competition.”

Gaston fell in his first set, 2-6, against Nima Roshan, but the Tiger junior bounced back in the second set outlasting Roshan in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5). Gaston took control early in the final set and went on to win, 6-3.

The Georgia native will now face Bruno Rodriguez on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. CT in the main draw.

Junior Martel Campbell’s six-match winning streak came to an end as he lost in straight sets, 6-2,6-3, to Alberto Francis.

“Martel has really established himself as a key contributor for this team,” Brown commented. “He ran into a much more experienced player today but that shouldn’t take away from what he accomplished in this tournament.”

Competition will begin early Tuesday morning.
