IRVINE, Calif. — Juniors Martel Campbell and Colt Gaston of the LSU men’s tennis team continued their strong showing at the Racquet Club of Irvine Meyer Pharmaceutical Pro Futures as both of the Tigers took three set victories.
“Campbell has had a terrific start this season,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “He is playing like he has something to prove. Gaston is picking up where he left off last season and he continues to rise to the occasion.”
After losing his first set, 1-6, Campbell was on the verge of losing his first match of the season. The California native would not be denied as he defeated Boris Bakalov by taking the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Gaston‘s match transpired in similar fashion. Gaston spilt his first two sets against Florian Lemke, 2-6, 6-2, but Gaston pulled away to the take the third set, 6-3.
Campbell and Gaston are set to compete Monday against, Alberto Francis and Nima Roshan, respectively. The winner of each match will go onto the main draw of the tournament.
“Tomorrow will be an even tougher day,” Brown commented. “Martel and Colt realize what is at steak and I think they are ready for the challenge.”
