Akin Joins Women’s Golf Coaching Staff

BATON ROUGE — Allison Akin, a tournament director for the American Junior Golf Association, has joined the staff of women’s golf coach Karen Bahnsen as assistant coach.

Shane Warren, who worked with both the men and women’s golf teams as assistant coach last year, will work exclusively with men’s coach Chuck Winstead this year.

Akin, a native of Hope, Ark., worked for the AJGA as tournament director for the last 2 1/2 years, and was in charge of planning coordinating and conducting some 25 events as the AJGA representative with the local organizing committees, handling all tournament budgeting, contracts and purchasing. She was also responsible for all tournament marking and course setup and handled tournament fund raising events that supported local grass roots junior golf programs and the AJGA Foundation.

Prior to joining the AJGA, she served as assistant coach for the men and women’s golf teams at Troy in the fall of 2003.

Akin received her bachelor of science in sports fitness management from the University of Alabama where she was a three-year-letterman on the Tide golf team. She was a three-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time Alabama Dean’s list honoree.

“We are very pleased to have Allison joining our women’s golf program,” said Bahnsen, the dean of SEC coaches who is entering her 23rd season as the head coach. “She brings a wealth of experience from the AJGA and a vast knowledge of the game and today’s players, not to mention having recently been involved in the college game during her playing days at Alabama.”

The 2006-07 season for the LSU women’s golf team, coming off an NCAA Championship appearance last May, begins Sept. 11 at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. LSU will host its annual LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic in mid-March at the University Club in Baton Rouge and the LSU home course will be the site of the 2007 NCAA East Women’s Golf Regional next May.
