LSU Women’s Golfers Finish 1-2 in CPT Event

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s women’s golfing twins, Melissa and Nicola Eaton, left their mark on the Collegiate Players Tour stop at Pelican Point Golf Club in Gonzales, posting a strong 1-2 finish in the 54-hole event that concluded on Wednesday.

Melissa captured the title in the event with a dominating performance, while Nicola rallied from fourth to second in the final round.

Both will be seniors in the 2006-07 season for the LSU women’s golf team. Melissa led the Tigers to an appearance in the NCAA Division I National Championships for the first time since 2001.

In winning the CPT event, Melissa posted a competitive women’s course record of 65 in the second round and finished the three-day event with a 12-under par total of 204. With a large second round lead, Melissa was able to easily roll home after a final round of two-under 70 to go with earlier rounds of 69 and 65.

Nicola made the biggest move of the final round, going from fourth to second after a 3-under round of 69. She posted a 54-hole score on the 5,897 women’s layout of 5-under 211 (72-70-69). She was two shots clear of Sharla Cloutier of Niceville, Fla., and Hillary Zeigler of Beaumont, Texas, at 3-under 213.

Kyle Collins of San Antonio, Texas, won the men’s division over a 6,865-yard par 71 layout at one-under 212, two shots ahead of Chris Taylor of Houston, Texas.
