BATON ROUGE — The LSU track and field team will be well represented in national competitions this coming weekend as a mix of 13 current and former athletes are slated to compete at the USA Championships, Jamaica National Championships and Trinidad national meet.
LSU will have six former standouts representing the purple and gold at the USA Championships in Indianapolis, June 22-25.
Muna Lee, the most decorated athlete in LSU track and field history, will compete in the 100 and 200 meters. She will be joined by fellow NCAA champion and All-American, Stephanie Durst, in the 100 meters and possibly the 200 meters.
Lolo Jones, a three-time NCAA champion while at LSU, will take part in the 100-meter hurdles.
For the men, world champion Walter Davis will see action in the triple jump, while Olympic silver medalist John Moffitt will compete in the long jump.
On the track, seven-time NCAA champion Kelly Willie will participate in the 100 and 200 meters and world and Olympic champion Derrick Brew will compete in the 400 meters.
LSU will also have five representatives at Jamaica’s National Championships, scheduled for June 23-25, at National Arena.
Current Tigers Isa Phillips and Andrea Linton headline the group.
Phillips, who is coming off an All-America performance in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships, will again be competing in that event.
Linton, who earned All-America status in the women’s triple jump just two weeks ago is entered in that event as well as the long jump.
Former LSU athletes on the docket include Peta-Gaye Dowdie, Hazelann Regis and Neisha Bernard-Thomas.
Dowdie is scheduled for the 100 and 200 meters. Regis will participate in the 400 meters and the preliminary round of the 200, while Bernard-Thomas will run the 800 meters.
The Trinidad National Championships are scheduled for, June 24-25, and will feature sophomores Kelly Baptiste and Richard Thompson.
Baptiste, who is coming off All-America honors in the 200 meters and 4×100-meter relay at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, will compete in the 100 meters and possibly the 200 meters.
Thompson will also take to the track in the 100 meters and make a decision later on in the 200 meters. A two-time All-American and NCAA champion he has run the lead leg on the Tigers’ national champion 4×100-meter teams each of the last two years.
