BROWNS SUMMITT, N.C. — Junior Melissa Eaton fired the lowest round of the tournament for the LSU women’s golf team Sunday with a 1-over par 73 to finish in a tie for 30th place at the Bryan National Collegiate at the Champions Course at Bryan Park Golf Club.
Eaton was one of three Lady Tigers to record three birdies in her final round as she finished the tournament tied with two other golfers at 11-over 227.
Sophomore Alexis Rather posted her best round of the tournament Sunday with a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 61st at 20-over 236, and freshman Caroline Martens was one stroke behind in a tie for 65th after carding a 4-over 76 in the final round. Sophomore Kim Meck tied for 73rd, while fellow sophomore Rebecca Kuhn finished in 86th.
The Lady Tigers finished the tournament in 16th place in the team standings after following scores of 314 and 324 in the first two rounds with a team-low 300 in the final round for a three-day total of 74-over 938.
Georgia entered the final round leading top-ranked Duke by two shots and extended that lead to five shots by the end of the round to capture the team title with an 11-over 875. The Bulldogs fired the only team score under par in the tournament Sunday with a 4-under 284.
Taylor Leon made it a clean sweep for the Bulldogs as she claimed medalist honors by three strokes over Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst with a 3-under 213, including a 3-under 69 in the final round. Duke’s Elizabeth Janangelo entered the final round tied atop the leaderboard with Leon and Nicole Smith of Tennessee but fell back into a tie for ninth place after a 5-over 77 in the final round. Smith finished tied for sixth.
The Lady Tigers will break for two weeks before returning to action in the 2006 Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championships, April 14-16, at The Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn. This season’s championship is hosted by Vanderbilt.
