OXFORD, Miss. — The LSU women’s tennis had a rough start to its weekend road trip, losing to Ole Miss, 5-0, Friday.
The Lady Tigers dropped to 8-9, still winless in the Southeastern Conference at 0-7. Ole Miss won just its second SEC match, improving its overall record to 9-6 (2-5 SEC).
Rain in Oxford moved the match to indoor courts at the Gillom Sports Center. Match time was also pushed back to 5 p.m.
The Rebels took control early by winning the doubles point. The court two duo of Nika Koukhartchouck and Kseniia Tokarieva defeated Marina Chiarelli and Anastasiya Dubova, 8-3. Daysi Espinal and Lauren Seaman took the win on court three over Carlin Cochran and Preethi Subramanian, 8-5.
The point came down to the match on court one, which Ilona Somers and Virgina Tomatis claimed for Ole Miss over Mykala Hedberg and Tiffany Tucker, 8-5.
Singles matches were only played three courts at a time because of the facility’s capacity.
Hedberg suffered a rough match on the No. 1 court, blanked by Somers in straight-sets. Tucker was ousted in straight-sets as well, 6-3, 6-2, to Koukhartchouck on court four.
Dubova, who dropped a tough first set to Tokarieva on court three in a tiebreaker, lost the second set as well, 6-2, to give Ole Miss the victory.
Chiarelli had lost her first set, won the second and was tied at 2-all with Tomatis on the three court when the match was clinched. She retired, allowing the Lady Rebels their fifth point.
The remaining singles matches were not played.
The Lady Tigers stay in Mississippi for a match with Mississippi State in Starkville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
