Track & Field Hosts Tiger Classic on Saturday

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s track and field team will be in competition at home for the second straight week as LSU hosts the Tiger Classic, being held at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on Saturday.

Competition in the field events is tentatively scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. Track events are slated to begin at 2 p.m. with the men’s steeplechase.

Admission to the event is free.

Both the Tiger and Lady Tiger squads are coming off very successful weekends. The combined squads qualified nine individuals and four relay teams for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet the last time out. LSU now has fourteen entries in the meet, being held this year in Knoxville, Tenn.

“This meet is going to be a regular qualifying type of meet,” said head coach Dennis Shaver. “We will be trying to reach a lot regional qualifying marks in individual events this weekend.”

Running in his first open quarter of the season, NCAA Indoor Track Athlete of the Year Xavier Carter will take to the track during the men’s 400-meter dash. Carter also will be running on both the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay teams which qualified for the regional meet last week.

Senior Kelly Willie, another member of the relay teams, will take to the track in the men’s 200-meter dash. Last weekend, the All-American shattered the regional mark in the 100-meter, qualifying with a time of 10.25. Willie was rewarded for his efforts as he was named SEC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Thursday.

Coming up next on the schedule for LSU, the squads will travel to Austin, Texas, for the 79th Texas Relays on April 5-8.
