STATESBORO, Ga. — Junior Chris Wells followed his 1-over par 73 in the first round with a 1-under 71 in the second round Saturday afternoon to lead the LSU men’s golf team on the first day of the 2006 Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club.
Wells is the lone Tiger in the top 20 as he currently sits in a tie for 17th with a combined even-par 144. Sophomore Beck Troutman fired LSU’s lowest round of the day with a 2-under 70 in the first round and is currently tied for 22nd with a 1-over 145, while senior Andrew Lanahan is tied for 29th after posting back-to-back rounds of 73 for a 2-over 146.
The Tigers finished the morning’s first round in a tie for fourth place in the team standings with a 6-over 294 and improved that total by one shot in the second round with a 5-over 293. LSU heads into Sunday’s final round tied with Georgia Southern and Ohio State for 11th place overall.
Second round leader North Carolina blistered the course in the afternoon by firing a tournament best 10-under 278 to lead Kentucky by four strokes with a two-round total of 7-under 569. Matt Harmon of Michigan State fired rounds of 68 and 69 to lead the individual competition by two shots heading into the final round with a 7-under 137.
The Tigers are paired with Augusta State and Toledo in Sunday’s final round and will tee off from the 10th tee beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST. Live scoring for the final round is provided by www.golfstat.com.
